One of my top public health goals is to require comprehensive tuberculosis (TB) screening for all individuals entering the United States—especially in light of the massive influx of undocumented workers from countries where TB remains widespread. Tuberculosis is a serious, airborne disease that has seen a troubling resurgence in recent years, including outbreaks in U.S. communities. Evidence suggests that this rise may be linked to unscreened individuals crossing the border from regions with high infection rates. To protect the health of American citizens, especially healthcare workers, teachers, and food industry employees, we must restore robust TB screening protocols at all levels. This is not about politics—it’s about preventing the silent spread of a deadly disease and safeguarding the public health systems we all depend on.
