I’m working to advance a strategic partnership between the United States and Japan to tackle one of our nation’s long-standing environmental challenges: underground coal mine fires. Under this plan, Japanese companies would help extinguish these fires using advanced technology in exchange for access to high-quality U.S. coal. That coal would then be used in cutting-edge Japanese power systems—featuring zeolite-based oxygen concentrators—that significantly boost combustion efficiency and reduce emissions. This clean coal initiative would spark a wave of innovation, encouraging Japanese and European ship engine manufacturers to design next-generation, fuel-efficient engines for global shipping. It’s a win for American jobs, global energy security, and the environment.
