Polio is a dangerous and highly infectious virus that spreads primarily through the ingestion of fecal matter—often due to poor sanitation and inadequate hygiene. While it’s nearly been eradicated in the developed world, polio remains a threat in several third world countries. A serious concern is that most people infected with polio show no symptoms at all, meaning they can unknowingly transmit the virus to others—especially in food service, caregiving, or communal environments. As the U.S. sees a growing influx of undocumented workers from regions where polio is still active, we must take preventive action. I support mandatory health screening and hygiene training for high-risk occupations to ensure this devastating disease is not reintroduced. Protecting the public from polio isn’t just good policy—it’s a matter of national health security.
